I took part in the Techfugees Hackathon with some friends. The aim is to use technology to improve the lives of Refugees.
We learned that smartphones are an invaluable tool for refugees but that they are reluctant to carry a phone out of their country because government or other forces will demand access to it to check whose side they’re on.
At the same time, there are hundreds of millions of smartphones, worth an eye watering $33 billion dollars (in the US alone) that are left unused when people upgrade their devices.
We created Geecyle.org to try to to get these unused smartphones to people who desperately need them.
